DHS Secretary Chertoff Visits Kuwait

During a March 24-25 visit to Kuwait, U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Michael Chertoff made two media appearances to explain how the United States balances security needs while extending a warm welcome to visitors from around the world.  Speaking on March 24 to reporters at a roundtable discussion at the American Embassy and on a March 25 live appearance on Kuwait TV’s “Good Morning Kuwait,” the Secretary noted that processing time at the counter for most travelers is just three to four minutes. Only a small minority might be subject to further questioning upon arrival, he said. Secretary Chertoff explained how a joint DHS-State Department initiative “Secure Borders, Open Doors” aims to take advantage of modern technology to make the process of entry into the United States more efficient and more secure.

For example, the use of “e-passports” that contain computer chips with biographic information make processing quicker and more reliable.  Use of biometrics such as electronic fingerscans also greatly improve efficiency and security.  The Secretary noted that travel to the U.S. is on the rise and that in 2007 the U.S. welcomed some 400 million visitors.  He took the opportunity at both events to thank the Government and the people of Kuwait for their generous hospitality of American service men and women who are stationed in the country.  During his visit, the Secretary met with Kuwaiti leaders to discuss security cooperation and to promote travel and trade.
