IRS/Income Tax

Tax Information

US citizens must report their worldwide income on their federal income tax returns.  Living abroad or earning income outside the United States does not relieve a US citizen of the responsibility for filing a tax return.  However, US citizens living and/or working abroad may be entitled to various deductions, exclusions, and credits.  The Consular Section has a limited supply of federal tax forms.  No state or local tax forms are provided.

For more information on US tax issues, please consult the Internal Revenue Service Web page http://www.irs.gov/and the Tax Information for US Citizens and Aliens abroad Web page http://www.irs.ustreas.gov/help/index.html: Go to site map (red bar located at the top of page), scroll down to bottom of page Help Topic, select "help with Tax Questions", on this page go to International Category and write your e-mail.  Questions are answered in date order and have a four day timeframe for response.  Individual IRS forms may be downloaded from the IRS Tax Forms Web page  http://www.irs.ustreas.gov/formspubs/index.html

U.S. taxpayers may also contact the IRS office at the U.S. Embassy in Paris for assistance.  They can be contacted via telephone, fax, email, or regular mail. Contact information and answers to many tax questions can be found on the web page of Embassy Paris’s web site at  http://www.amb-usa.fr/irs/irs.htm
